"Meanwhile" was the first column of drawn journalism to appear in The New York Times. Researched, written, drawn, and designed by Wendy MacNaughton, it began as a weekly column in Sunday Business in 2018 and ran for one year. (Then Wendy quit because doing all that was a recipe for burn-out. Sometimes we have to learn things the hard way.)

The visual stories featured "the big implications behind seemingly small things", and explored subjects like the big business of prison video visitation, the art market inside the USPS, and the earth-saving distinction between dirt and soil.
